Training

This is just some descriptions of the regular sessions we hold week in week out. All are welcome, from the orienteering legends to those just starting out. Any sessions that are different from these will be put in our weekly email and post on our Facebook group.

Monday:
Recovery Run - 1745. Meet at the DVC (the green arrow), this is on the Southern corner of the playpark on the East of the meadows. This is a very chilled, jog for all no matter what pace you run. A great way to have a chat to other members and catch up on the EUOC goss!

Tuesday:
Morning Run - 0710. Meet DVC. A steady morning run of about 45 minutes. Aiming to return to DVC by 0800.

Intervals - 1800. Meet at the DVC again. Intervals are runs where you alternate between a faster pace and a slower pace. It's a hard session for all and will get you fit. However don't hesitate to join. Everyone goes at their own pace and you can do as much as you want of the session. It is bound to improve your running a lot. These sessions are coached by Andy Kitchin, who will either send us a plan of what to do that week, or lead the session himself. It is designed to help us peak our training for the orienteering season. If you do not like what we're doing you can always join in with the Hairies who have their's at the same time.

Wednesday:
Pentlands Long Run - 1400. On Wednesday the winning students have their long run in the Pentlands. There are often spare places available which will be opened up to EUOC members. This will generally leave from Bex's flat (11 Sienna Gardens), inside the housing complex at the car park outside number 11 at around 2pm. There will generally be about 8+ places not including drivers. Priority will go to winning students as they will fund buses if we get them. However there have generally been a few spare places for this run each time they've run the past few weeks.
The run itself will generally be about 90 mins long, and for safety reasons we ask those who attend have themselves run for 90 minutes or above before. Also please bring a waterproof, spare change of clothes and a little bit of snack type food. While being close, the Pentlands can be as unforgiving as any fell. A small contribution will be required for petrol, this will be confirmed later.
Full details will be sent out weekly either by Bex or Rona. If you wish to go please let Bex know either by email or facebook message.

Pasta Night - Normally 1900. This will be at a club member's flat. This is where you'll really get to know the other member's of the club and tuck into some lovely grub cooked by one of our club members. It's always great fun and often the start to many great nights out! Details will be given by our social secs each week. It costs just £1. bargain!

Thursday:
Morning Run - 0710. Meet DVC. A steady morning run of about 45 minutes. Aiming to return to DVC by 0800.

Hills session - meet 1245 in KB house reception. This is normally a combination of 6 short hill repeats followed by 6 long ones. Pretty much you run up a short steep hill as fast as you can 6 times, then go and do it again for a longer one! Don't be put off though, hill training is probably as good as intervals for improving your running.

Thursday evening will alternate between Fight with the Night and circuits, so make sure you check Rona's email so you know which one is going on! I'll describe each below.

Fight with the Night (FWTN) - This is run by Jo Shepherd this year. Throughout the year EUOC host a night orienteering event, this will be in parks around Edinburgh. Jo will give everyone the information for each FWTN as they arrive. Almost all the areas are accessible by public transport, bicycle and walking. This is great fun and will work wonders for your navigation. You will need a headtorch but can probably borrow one from another club member if needs be. More information on the FWTN can be found on our website

Circuits - This will be at 1915, run by Jack. Meet in the CSE circuits gym. For those of you who don't know where that is I will meet you in the main reception area for this week only. The focus for circuits is to help prevent injury and increase running efficiency by strengthening a lot of the muscles involved in running and orienteering. Contrary to that very dry description, it's also a top laugh.

Friday:
Traditionally a rest day, but if you're feeling super keen and want to do a run or something then I'm sure there will be other super keen people who want to join you! That's what our facebook group is designed for!

The Weekend:
The ones to really look out for are the weekends away, organised once a month. These are always really fun trips with plenty of bant. It's also when you will find yourself going to some of the most technical terrain and some really interesting events! Don't panic if you're a beginner though, every event we go to caters for beginners. In fact you will learn a lot from going to someof the more technical areas. More info on these to come. The freshers trip is coming up and I'll send an email about that on Monday.

When there are no weekends away there is normally still something going on. Either a local event, Orienteering training or something even whackier. Again this is when it's a good time to check the facebook group and Rona's email.
