Parking space is limited so make sure cars are shared where possible.

If help getting to the area has been requested, a pick up from Dundee station will be provided by a minibus and cars at 9:30. (The 7:59 from Edinburgh gets into Dundee at 9:21). Please make yourself known to the shuttle driver. Every group requiring a shuttle should also provide a contact number.

Terrain

The BUCS Orienteering event is held on the southern slopes of the Sidlaw Hills above Dundee.  The area is mainly open hillside, covering the three hills of Auchterhouse, Balkello and Balluderon. On the lower slopes is a community woodland; further uphill are areas of scattered Scots pine and Larch; several areas with old quarry workings resulting in fine technical detail and broken ground; a good path network with some fast runnable open terrain suitable for runners, though in places there is heather to test the stamina.

For the geographers:

The Balkello site has excellent rock exposures in the old quarries of 400 million years old (Devonian) fluvial sandstones and lacustrine mudstones with primitive plant fossils. In particular there are superb examples of Parka decipiens (algae) which have been described and figured in geological literature since 1800 onward. A small fault is also well seen together with an igneous intrusion. The hilltop is also a splendid viewpoint for the surrounding area.

Features marked with uncrossable purple over print must not be crossed at any point other than a designated, marked crossing point.

Commentary on the race will be provided with a couple of radio controls and a spectator control visible from the area. Live results will also be set up in a tent.

2 portable toilets are located a small distance from the assembly area.

There is no catering so make sure you have plenty of food for yourselves.

Finish

The finish is located in the assembly area.

If someone has finished and you have not yet run please do not look at their map. Anyone seen doing so may be disqualified.

Water will be provided at the finish but no cups to reduce rubbish so bring water bottles.

Start

The start is a 30 minute walk from the assembly area. The route passes through private land which should be respected, not leaving the designated route.

Butterfly Loops - Some courses may require competitors to visit the same control more than once in a "butterfly loop". Competitors are reminded that they must visit all the controls in the order specified on the course, if this requires visiting the same control more than once then that control must be "punched" at each visit to the control.

Safety

A First Aid kit will be available on site and a qualified first aider will be there. For more serious injuries, the nearest accident and emergency is at Ninewells Hospital. Please note that competitors take part at their own risk. Those who remember the last time BUCS was hosted in Edinburgh will know that the weather can be extreme, even in March! Please bring adequate clothing for rain, hail or snow.

Results

Provisional results will be available shortly after the event found at

Relay - 20/03/11 – Gullane

Directions

Gullane is around 20 miles east of Edinburgh. Driving from the town centre, head to the A1 (either by picking up the A1 in town via Regent Road, or by heading south along the A7 and the A702 city bypass). Then head east out of Edinburgh along the A1 for about 4 miles. Leave the A1 heading north along the A198, keep on the A198 as it turns right at the first roundabout. Follow the A198 through Longniddry to the coast, then through Aberlady and eventually into Gullane. Immediatly after getting into Gullane take the second left down Sandy Loan. Follow to the end and turn left into the carpark.

For detailed travel directions click here.

Parking

There is sufficient parking space, but please note that the car park will be used by members of the public, so please park sensibly and with consideration of others.

Please note that minibuses will be unable to park in the car park due to a 2.1m barrier, so please find suitable space next to the entrance or further up to road (Sandy Loan). Please park responsibly so that you are not blocking the road for other users.

Terrain

Gullane is a mixture of open complex dunes, mature pine woods and an intricate path network through thick scrub. The area is a public access area and there will be walkers and dogs. Please be considerate to other users of the area.

In the areas of sand dune near the car park there has been work underway to clear buckthorn bushes. The cleared bushes have been piled up around the dunes. These temporary features, although sizeable and in some cases larger than mapped thickets, have not been mapped.

To aid navigation individual trees and bushes have been added to the map to the west of the assembly. This is not the case for the rest of the area, where only sizeable thickets ( >2m diameter) have been added.

Assembly area

The assembly area is adjacent to the car park. The handover, finish, download/map collection tent, commentary and viewing point for the spectator control will be located in the assembly area.

In the interests of fairness warming up should only be done on areas of short grass adjacent to the car park, and not beyond the spectator control. All other areas, except the road down to the toilets and the route to the start are strictly out of bounds.

Starts

The mass start for first legs will be held on the beach 100m north of the assembly area. Please follow the marked route. Warming up is permitted on the beach from the start point westwards (left as you approach) but athletes must not leave the path to the beach to warm up in the sand dunes. First leg runners will be visible from the start after around 3-4 minutes of running so spectators may wish to hang around after the starts to see how the race has started! The beach and route to it will be re-embargoed 10 minutes after the last mass start at which point all spectators must return to the assembly area.

Changeover for 2nd and 3rd legs will be in the assembly area and runners must then follow tapes to the start kite.

Facilities

Public toilet facilities are just to the north of the car park, please follow signs and stick to the paths to avoid entering the competition area. There is a small shop and two cafes in Gullane itself, about 500m walk away from the assembly area.

Team Declarations

Please note that team declarations must be made on the Saturday, before leaving the individual race. It is expected that runners will use the same SI cards as for the individual event. If there are any late changes, the declared SI card must be given to the runner on the correct leg. It will be possible to make some changes the morning of the race, but there will be very limited time for this. Changes to names may have to wait until the post event results processing.

Courses

The relays are teams of 3.
