Pollock Halls Permanent Orienteering Course was set up in 2009 by the University of Edinburgh and local orienteering clubs in order to enable orienteering to be available to the wider community. If you are a student that would like to use the course then contact EUOC for further details. If you are a group which would like to use the site, please contact Sandra Kinnear to arrange a suitable time.   Sandra.Kinnear"at"ed.ac.uk

Introduction

The Pollock Orienteering Project was a joint initiative between the University of Edinburgh and Paths for All.  The University is committed to encouraging staff, students and guests to improve their health and reduce their carbon footprint.  Paths for All is a national charity which supports and encourages walking for health.  Their vision is for a happier, healthier, greener, more active Scotland.

Background

James Jarvis, a Warden at Pollock Halls of Residence (PHR), installed a permanent orienteering course for use of student jogging groups.  Roz Pollock, the University’s Health Promotion Development Coordinator, saw an opportunity to use the new course to promote workplace walking and applied successfully to Paths for All to fund the project.  Sandra Kinnear, Accommodation Manager and Sustainability Champion, played a vital role in this project.

Pollock Halls of Residence

PHR is the main University of Edinburgh halls of residence.  The site is located in the South of the city, next to Holyrood Park and managed by Accommodation Services.  There are approximately 600 staff, 2,700 students and over 28,000 guests in any one year at Pollock Halls.

Who is the course accessible to?

The orienteering course is primarily available to staff, students, conference delegates and guests based at PHR.  Other University staff and students and community members are also invited to use the course by prior arrangement.

Who is the course suitable for?

The PHR orienteering course provides an excellent introduction for those new to orienteering.  It is located on flat ground and in an enclosed area.  Most courses incorporate the use of existing pathways.  Some steps are present on the site but a course with no steps is available.

Building on the success of the Permanent Orienteering Course at Pollock Halls, EUOC are now leading a project to set up a permanent course at the Kings Buildings in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh, Scottish Agricultural College and local orienteering clubs, Interlopers and Edinburgh Southern.
We hope to have the course in place by September 2011.
Kings Buildings is an exciting sprint area often used for training by EUOC and has also been used for events such as the Scottish Sprint Championships in 2010.
